Fig.1 before braces, Jason's teeth are covered by yellowish plaque.  The gums between upper two front teeth (arrowhead) are reddish.  These suggest that he does not brush his teeth well.  Or not so straight teeth make it hard for him to keep his teeth clean, back to original article
