Heavy Biters and Types of Crown
Heavy biters (bruxers) refer to those people who love to chew something tough, such as chicken bone, lobster legs, ice and nuts. We even suspect them to grind their teeth while sleeping! It appears that they never stop grinding. Mr. Wang is one of them. One of his molar teeth has had root canal (Fig.1 R). It has a large chip (fracture, F in Fig.1). A crown is fabricated to protect the tooth (Fig.2 C). Five years later, the tooth protector (crown) has porcelain chip. In fact he also breaks the roots of this tooth. The tooth cannot be saved.
Can you figure out the magnitude of heavy biting? It appears that these people can grind diamond into small pieces, but at the same time, they suffer big loss. If we know that you are a heavy biter, we need to make a gold crown (Fig.4 G). Gold crown may last 20 or 30 years. It apparently never breaks, although it may be worn out over time.
If you are cosmetically driven, we can make a new type of porcelain crown, which is reported to fit these heavy biters.
