When the implant has been used for 20 months, the bone around it is denser (Fig.5' *, as compared to the same areas in Fig.4').  A new bone plate (cortex) forms (Fig.5' >), which is absent when the abutment (A) and the crown (C) are just placed over the implant (I). Fig.4' and 5' are magnification of Fig.4 and 5 in the main article, respectively.
