Basic Setup

  1. Clean up with disinfectant and disposable napkin any area potentially touched by DA and doctor.  Cover headlight handles with sticky tapes (folded once)
  2. Load a 3-way syringe (which is NOT disposable) on doctor’s side and saliva suction for DA.  The latter is covered by a plastic sleeve
  3. For prophy and deep cleaning (but not for gross debridement), load prophy cup and place prophy paste on doctor’s side.  For every 2 quadrant scaling & root planning, we need one 2x2 gauze
  4. Whenever possible, load Piezo (or Cavitron) ultrasound tip with a wrench inside black plastic box, but do not over tighten it.  Ask patient to open mouth wide. Look at mouth, particularly lower incisors’ lingual side to determine how much calculus is.  The more calculus, the larger tip of ultrasound should be used.  When doctor finishes ultrasound scaling, place the handpiece temporarily on DA’s delivery system (rail).  When patient leaves, clean the handpiece and unload ultrasound tip with a wrench outside the box.  Place the tip on tray to be autoclaved.  The tip is expensive and easily lost.  In the evening before we dump trash, double check the number of Piezo tips.  We do not lose any one of them.  Now there are thirteen of them.
  5. Put back the ultrasound handpiece into its holder after surface disinfection
  6. Autoclave wrench now and then
  7. Place small instruments such as ultrasound tip, isolate burs, unused, but contaminated stainless steel crown and ortho bands in a netted container, rinse and autoclave
  8. Return Assistant Page
