Although there is severe radiolucency in the mesial (M) socket (Fig.1), there is no corresponding buccal defect post extraction.  Osteotomy starts in the septum.  While a 3.5 mm reamer remains in the septum (Fig.7), a 6.5 mm tap deviates to the distal (D) socket (Fig.8).

Although the osteotomy extends 4.85 mm deeper, the tap cannot be placed that far (Fig.8).  It is almost cylindrical, no cutting and advancing power as more tapered taps (such as Tatum's).  The apical bone has to be removed before the UF tap can be seated deeper.
