Implant in Sufficient Bone Height
A 60-year-old man has lost the tooth #19 for approximate 20 years (Fig.1). The superior border of the Inferior Alveolar Canal is not distinct in PA. An implant that is slightly longer than the root of the neighboring tooth should be safe (Fig.2). Panoramic X-ray reveals plenty of bone height (Fig.3). Therefore, initial osteotomy depth will be 10 mm. Insert a parallel pin and take the 1st intraop PA for depth confirmation. If there is enough bone to place a 14 mm implant (Fig.4), but the crestal width is insufficient, place a 12 mm implant subcrestally to prevent thread exposure.
