After using 1.5 mm pilot drill (Fig.3 D) following crown removal (*), the roots are extracted, leaving mesial (Fig.4 M) and distal (D) sockets.  The initial osteotomy appears to divide the septum into two portions (1,2).  Osteotomes are going to push these two segments of the septum partially into the sockets.
