In fact better trajectory and more bone contact is achieved once the osteotomy is made in the mesial socket (Fig.3, compare to Fig.2).  Four threads of the tap have engaged in the septum (black line, as compared to 3 threads when the tap is placed in the distal socket), arrow points to the bone height the tap contacts mesially.
