Luckily the patient returns for #31 implantation 4 months post socket preservation.  Bone forms in the alveolus and above (Fig.1 black and white arrowheads, respectively, as compared to preop). Yellow dashed line: the upper border of the inferior alveolar canal.

A few patients may not return for delayed implant after socket preservation.  When the pain is gone, they may not have motivation for further treatment. 

Immediate implant carries high risk of inferior alveolar nerve paresthesia when infection exists in the lower 2nd molar.  If the pain is not readily controlled, socket preservation is recommended.
