Socket Shield Prevents Gingival Recession

A 89-year-old man has poor dentition (Fig.1).  After caries control (Fig.2), implants are placed at #7 and 8 (Fig.3).  Because of the buccal plate fracture associated with extracted the ankylosed tooth #8, postop gingival recession occurs (Fig.3 arrow).  To prevent the complication, socket shield will be performed if extraction of the tooth #10 turns out to be difficult.  A 2.5 or 3x16 mm 1-piece or 3.5x13 mm/3.8x15 mm 2-piece implant will be attempted to be placed.  Take preop photos to show #7 and 8 crowns and #10 residual root .  Incision may be made to expose the labial crest to make sure that the the remaining labial portion of the root is caries free after extraction with sectioning.
