Fig.2: A surgical suction down stent is fabricated from a wax up model and then tries in an original model.  Initial osteotomies is made in the edentulous area (#13, 14 and 15).

The plastic stent is not designed for guidance of drilling.  It is mainly used for checking before and after drilling.  While X-ray helps deciding the mesiodistal position and trajectory of osteotomy, the stent helps the buccolingual position and trajectory to avoid buccal and lingual plate perforation.

Barium sulphate (radiopaque) can be add to the stent, which is worn while CBCT is being taken.  This process is helpful to implant design.
